Saint Petersburg, ITS News – A student from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has once again achieved a proud accomplishment on the international stage. This great achievement comes from Hanifah Awwalun Nisa’, a student from the ITS Department of Visual Communication Design (DKV), who successfully won the HSE x ITS: Art of Reframe competition, which brought her to Russia.

This film poster creation competition is a collaboration between HSE Art and Design School and the ITS Department of Visual Communication Design. The competition invited Department of Visual Communication Design students from both institutions to showcase their best works, which were judged by various international judges. “So, this competition also involved students from HSE Art and Design School to compete,” explained Ipeh, her nickname.

This partnership, which resulted in a collaborative competition, utilized film as an element in creating the works. Both parties were required to delve into films from different countries, strengthening the collaboration between the two universities. “In this competition, participants from Russia received Indonesian film material for their works, and vice versa for participants from Indonesia (ITS),” said the girl from Tulungagung.

In her work, this batch 2023 student used a film titled Night Watch to create her poster. She chose the film due to her interest in the thriller and horror genres, allowing her to create various visually pleasing visuals through her poster. “Besides that, it turns out this film is also one of the legendary films in Russia,” she said enthusiastically.

Ipeh herself admitted that she completed the six posters in less than a month since early March. Starting from in-depth research on the film to making 10 alternative sketches. She even faced several obstacles, such as a damaged laptop, which required her to redo the work on her phone to produce a work that could take her to Russia. “I didn’t expect to get to this point, considering the hard work before,” she added, full of emotion.

On her journey to the other continent, Ipeh had the opportunity to share her work in an exhibition that also featured 20 other selected works from ITS Department of Visual Communication Design students in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Being able to exhibit her work internationally while also visiting another country provided a new and amazing experience for Ipeh. “I also gave a speech at the opening of the event,” Ipeh said proudly.

Not only that, one of the jury coordinators from ITS, Naufan Noordyanto SSn MSn, viewed this competition as an internationalization event for students and a way for the two countries to get to know each other’s cultures. “This activity also provides a space for student involvement, so they will also be more active in creating works,” said the lecturer from the ITS Department of Visual Communication Design who has exhibited his works in 47 countries.

The master’s graduate from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta explained that the closed competition was also part of one of the courses in ITS Department of Visual Communication Design, namely Digital Illustration. Four classes in this course are supervised by four lecturers: Rabendra Yudistira Alamin ST MDs, Dr. Rahmatsyam Lakoro SSn MT, Nugrahardi Ramadhani SSn MT, and himself.

Ipeh’s victory in this event also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially point 4 and 17. Ipeh hopes that through this competition and the achievements she has attained, there will be more excellent collaborations of this kind in the future that provide benefits and extraordinary experiences.
